Hello! I'm Sydney

I am a Spanish Language and International Health major at Clemson University! I plan to graduate in May 2023 and continue my education at a Physicians Assistant school. I have been motivated to pursue a career in medicine all my life, and my education at Clemson University has put me on track to succeed.

This website displays my coursework, information about my internship and study abroad experience in Spain, my resume, and outreach. Most of all, I hope my website highlights my skills and values. I believe my communication skills, in both English and Spanish, will be significant in a career in medicine. Another essential attribute of a Physician Assistant is teamwork. Physician’s Assistants must partner with Physicians and Nurses to provide every patient with the best possible care. My career goals are driven by my desire to make a difference in people’s lives. Every patient should be treated with empathy, quality care, and knowledge.  I hope you can learn about me and my journey as an L&IH major through this site.

INTERNSHIP
INTERNSHIP

This paper reflects and analyzes my internship experience at Clínica Santa Isabel in Seville, Spain, in my target language.

STUDY ABROAD

My study abroad experience in Seville, Spain, has undoubtedly been one of my most formative and enriching experiences. From immersing myself in the language and culture of Spain by taking Spanish classes and living with a host family to gaining valuable professional experience through an internship at a hospital, every aspect of my experience has helped me grow, learn, and evolve as a person. The climate, geography, daily life, student life, and family habits contributed to the cultural shock and meaningful insights I gained from the experience.

The cultural differences were evident right from the moment I arrived in Seville. The climate was different, with blazing heat and no air conditioning. The city's layout was unique, with narrow streets between beautiful buildings. Public transportation is much more familiar, with many people taking the buses while most others walk, bike, and use scooters to get around the city. I also had to get used to different shopping, with most stores closing during the afternoon for siesta.

Before embarking on my study abroad journey, I was apprehensive about my ability to communicate effectively in Spanish. The language barrier and fear of making mistakes made me anxious. However, after taking Spanish classes in Seville, I realized immersion was the key to improvement. I began feeling more comfortable and confident as I was forced to communicate in Spanish daily. The professors at the university were incredibly supportive and helped me develop my language skills. The classroom activities were complemented by numerous field trips and cultural activities that exposed me to real-life situations and cultural nuances. I eagerly participated in class discussions and confidently communicated outside the classroom.

Living with a host family was one of the most valuable aspects of my study abroad experience. My family was welcoming and went above and beyond to make me feel at home. Living with them helped me assimilate into the culture, learn about Spanish customs, and understand the local way of life. My host mom was an excellent cook who introduced me to traditional Spanish dishes such as paella and "tortilla de España" which quickly became some of my favorites. I especially enjoyed our conversations over meals, where I learned more about Spanish society, politics, and culture. One of my most memorable conversations with my host family was regarding cultural lifestyles. I learned how Spain is one of the most relaxed and laid-back countries in the world, where people are not in a rush and take their time to enjoy life while still valuing their work and being efficient in their businesses.

During my time in Seville, I also had the opportunity to intern at a hospital. The internship was a unique experience that gave me valuable insights into the Spanish healthcare system. I worked alongside doctors and nurses, observed medical procedures, and interacted with patients. The experience was incredibly challenging yet rewarding, verifying my interest in pursuing a healthcare career. I applied my Spanish language skills professionally, which helped me enhance my communication skills. I felt like a part of the team and learned much about the importance of patient care and collaboration in healthcare.

Overall, my study abroad experience in Seville has been an unforgettable chapter of my life. I have learned to adapt to a new culture, language, and environment while developing my personal and professional skills. I have made lifelong friends, broadened my horizons, and grown in ways I never thought possible. Studying abroad has taught me the value of stepping out of my comfort zone and challenging myself, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have had this experience. I strongly recommend studying abroad to anyone who has the chance. It is a life-changing experience that shapes who you are and whom you will become.

ACTIVITIES AND OUTREACH
ACTIVITIES AND OUTREACH
Certified Nursing Assistant
During the first COVID lockdown in the Spring of 2020, I obtained my CNA certification. For the past two years, I have been working as a CNA at Oconee Memorial Hospital. I have worked approximately 1000 hours so far during my time at Clemson.
Service Learning
I have taken several courses that have incorporated service learning in the community. In my Health and the Hispanic Community class we helped lead "lunch and learns" in the community and volunteered with organizations like PASOs. In my Functional Assessment of Older Populations course we developed and performed fall risk prevention testing in the community. Lastly, in my Medical Interpreting and Translation course, I had the opportunity to volunteer as an interpreter for a Prisma Health simulation and work with Clemson Rural Health's VeggieRx and WiseWoman programs.
Student Volunteer
In summer of 2022, I had the able to volunteer with Clemson's Rural Health Clinic in Walhalla. The clinic services underserved patient populations and has a high number of Spanish speaking patients with limited English proficiency.
